THE PERFECT EGG
MIKE CUNNINGHAM
AUGUST 7, 2005

Once upon a time there were a couple of things [a couple of raw eggs] like I have in these two cups. What do they look like to you kids? Are you sure they're not a couple of frogs or butterfly's? They really are two eggs, aren't they?

Let's pretend this one is a girl egg and the other one is a boy egg. Let's also make believe that soon after they meet they become real good friends. They enjoy doing fun things together like playing at the beach or going for a pizza. They have lots of fun together.

But guess what? Even though they are the best of friends, sometimes they get angry with each other. You kids have never gotten angry with your best friend or a brother or a sister have you? Do you forgive them and still play with them? Real friends always forgive one another don't they? That's good because it's what God wants us to do.

Well anyway, let's pretend that these boy and girl eggs grow up and become adults like your parents. They are still best friends. Actually, they have become such really good friends that they like each other better than any other man or woman egg in the whole world. Guess what they decide to do?

After they get married, what do you think they would like to have? So…they pray and ask God to send them a baby egg. Guess what else? God does. I bet you can't guess what I have in this cup. I'm going to ask [________] to take the lid off the cup then pass the cup around so all of you can see what's inside. Is that a baby egg [tiny plastic pickle] that looks like its parents?

I'm going to ask [________] to take the lid off this cup and pass it around so that each of you kids can see what's inside. Is that an egg [tiny plastic worm] that looks like its momma and poppa? Well…I have only have one cup left. Would [_________] take the lid off and pass it around so everyone can see what's inside. Is that an egg [raw egg] that looks just like its parents? How can you tell? All eggs look alike don't they?

Well…let's keep pretending. Even baby eggs get to grow up in time. When this baby egg gets bigger do you think it will always be as nice as it was when it was a baby? Do you think it might be naughty sometimes? Do you think its parents or brothers and sisters will ever get angry with it? And when it goes outside to play with the other kid eggs do you think it might sometimes be naughty?

Actually, some of the kids you guys know are naughtier than others, aren't they. In fact, I'll bet some are so naughty that you could even say they are stinkers. Guess what? I have some really bad news. God tells us in the Bible that He has to punish naughty people. Even if the person isn't a stinker and was naughty only one time; God still has to punish them. That's real bad news.

How do you think God punishes naughty people? He let's them continue being naughty forever. Can you imagine what it would be like if a naughty person just kept getting worse and worse? You might even say the person is a bad egg. Actually, you could go so far as to say that the person was such a bad egg that it even stinks rotten like the one I have I this cup [broken egg sprinkled with dehydrated cow manure]. No matter how cute and cuddly that person was when it was a tiny baby, you wouldn't want to even go near it. Would anyone like to take a whiff of this egg?

By now some of you might be wondering how those eggs even started becoming naughty in the first place. I'm going to ask [_______] to bring that cup over here and open it up and tell us what's inside. Then pass it back to me please. What is this thing? Do you see the difference between the momma and poppa and baby eggs that are in these cups and this new one I'm holding in my hand [an egg in its shell]?

Guess what? In the beginning God made the first two eggs just like the one I'm holding in my hand. They weren't naughty when God made them. God never ever made a bad egg. They make themselves naughty by disobeying God. So do people. God warned the first two eggs not to be naughty. He told them that if they did they would fall and then they would change big time. Guess what? They didn't believe God. They fell. Just like this egg is going to when I drop it into the pot. Now God would have to punish them. He would let them be naughty forever.

Well what can they do? They have to be just like a good egg if they want to please God and not be a stinking rotten egg forever. That should be simple. All the egg has to do is put itself back together again just like it were before it fell. Do you think these eggs can do that? I think they probably need some help. Would [______] please put these two eggs back together for us? Then I'll end my sermon and we can leave church and all go outside and have some fun.

That's not so good. I know what we can do. It's good we have some adults with us today. Let's see if one of your parents will volunteer to put this broken egg back together. Then we can all go home. How about Mr. [_____}? How about Mrs. [____]? Well then, how about Archie? He went to Bible collage.
He's the man who's sitting over there with the big grin on his face?

Now those eggs really have big time problems. They can't put themselves back together again and neither can anyone else make them whole again. And to top it all off God says He has to let them get naughtier and naughtier. That's really very bad news.

I don't want any of you kids leaving this church feeling sad. Neither does God. I have good news for you. Actually, it's great news. God loves naughty eggs so much that He sent His only Son into our world looking just like one of these broken eggs. When His Son arrived as a baby He looked just like all the other broken eggs only He was different. He never ever did anything naughty. Not even once. Not even when He got older. Oh, He had plenty of chances to disobey God but He never did. Actually, God's Son is The Perfect Egg.

Guess what The Perfect Egg did? He loved all broken eggs so much that He offered to take God's punishment in their place. All they had to do was accept His offer. That's great news. But guess what? The broken eggs couldn't even do that much to help themselves. And no one could do it for them either. They are just like a dead skunk lying on the side of the road. Can you imagine a flattened skunk jumping up and running after some M & M's you threw out the car window? No matter how yummy M&M's are, they will never get to melt in that skunk's mouth.

Well, those naughty eggs really have a big problem. They can't help themselves and no one can help them either. How can we say that that's great news? Do you kids remember how a little while ago I told you about how much God loved naughty eggs? They couldn't do anything to help themselves but God sure could. Guess what? He did!

After The Perfect Egg was punished by God He died. His parents and all of His friends were very very sad. But guess what? After three days God made Him come back to life. He visited with His parents and all His friends. Can you kids imagine how happy those eggs must have been when they saw Him? I know I can. Anyway, after He visited with them awhile He went back up to Heaven which is where He came from in the first place. He went back only because He loved them so very very much.

Guess what He did next? He sent the Holy Spirit Egg from Heaven to our world. When that Special Egg got here He dropped a tiny seed right into all of the naughty eggs His Father told Him to just like I'm doing right now. Only He never misses like I just did. Oh I know you didn't see me drop anything. That's because I was pretending to be The Holy Spirit Egg. No one can see Him either because He's invisible.

Because of what The Father and His Son and Holy Spirit did, those naughty eggs now were able to accept God's free offer to let The Perfect Egg take their place. Can you believe that? You could even say they would be born-again. Oh they still looked like all the other broken eggs but you could tell The Holy Spirit Egg had accomplished His mission.

Slowly but surely those broken eggs started to change. So much so, that now they really tried with all of their strength never to be naughty again. Actually, they really didn't like themselves when ever they broke one of God's rules. Whenever they did, and that was a lot of times because they're not perfect, they asked God to forgive them and to help them not be disobedient again. Guess what? He always forgives them and helps them because He promised He would.

Now they are safe. It's almost like they are sitting in The Perfect Eggs lap. Well that's a relief. But suppose they were to wiggle out of His arms and jump off His lap and start to be naughty again. Will God punish them and let them be naughty forever and ever and turn into a smelly rotten egg?

No way Jose! The Perfect Egg promised that He wouldn't loose any of the eggs His Father gave Him. He wouldn't let them run away from Him forever. One way or another, He promised to bring them back to Himself before they left this world and went to Egg Heaven. Then they will change so much so that they will come back together again and become whole. They will look like this egg I'm holding in my hand. They won't be broken any more. Now they won't only act like Him. They will even look just like Him.

It gets even better if you can believe. Now watch this. Those eggs in Heaven won't ever be able to disobey God and break anymore than this [wooden egg] egg I'm going to drop right now. Guess what else? They will live happily ever after with The Perfect Egg.

There may be some people in this little church right now, who, up until this moment, did not want to admit that they are so naughty that God will punish them. But He has too, even if they were naughty only one time.

Some folks may be thinking right now that there is nothing they can do about their brokenness and become whole. The Holy Spirit has to drop that invisible seed right inside them. That's true. But actually it's also true that there is nothing in the whole wide world that can prevent anyone from asking God to forgive them and to change them unless they want to stay naughty instead of trying their very best to follow The Perfect Egg.

Let's bow our heads for a moment and think about everything we have just heard. I know some folks will want to silently thank Jesus for all He has done for them and the work is doing in their heart. Others may want to silently ask Him to forgive them and invite Him into their heart right now. Guess what? If you do, He will, because He can't break even one of His promises.
